a HUGE SUCCESS!

Members of Mid-Cities SOS are known to be nothing short of AMAZING! The Club’s final project for 2011 was the annual holiday wish List, and this year we aimed very high indeed. Every year, we ask SafeHaven to compile a list of needed and wished-for items to bring a bit of comfort and joy to women who are residing at the shelter due to domestic violence. We’ve all heard many times how many of these women have entered the shelter in a time of crisis, without having had the time or opportunity to pack their belongings. SOS members have always been quick to step up and help take care of many of their needs, and this time was no exception.

Donations began arriving at our December luncheon meeting held at Bonnell’s. Donations kept arriving at our drop-off sites right up till Christmas. AND, our members – obviously very adept at scoping out the sales – kept the donation deliveries coming all the way into early January! Shelter staff was extremely gratified to receive all the wonderful gifts you have provided. We’re told that we certainly did bring smiles to the ladies. We were able to give the gift of comfort to so many residents of the shelters at a time when it was so very needed.

The goal was to provide 100 items of comfortable apparel, including the always-in-demand sleepwear. Members have been curious about the numbers, so please take delight in how well we did:

Plus, a number of gift cards and checks were received that are to be applied to urgent needs, as well as miscellaneous items suitable for shelter use or for residents about to move into their new transitional living quarters.

We cannot thank enough our members who let us use their business or front door as a drop-off site. These are: Linda Eilenfeldt of RE/MAX Masters in Southlake, Sally Bustamante of Bates Container in North Richland Hills, and Patti Campbell’s front door in Colleyville. They helped us to accommodate our members in location and timing and accept donations well beyond our December meeting date.

We also thank those of you who tapped your friends’ and co-workers’ shoulders to help shoot us way over our goal!

Our SOS members should be very proud of how you have touched the lives of those who need our assistance. Because of you, many women were given a little bit more comfort during their stay at the shelter. Applause and kudos to you all!

6^th Annual Celebrity Chefs Benefit & Auction

Well done! Celebrity Chefs 2012 was the ultimate mix of business (raising funds) with pleasure (fine dining and wine).

A theme of "Healing Hands" and record attendance of 390 created an exciting evening. Thank you for helping the children of SafeHaven who suffer in silence from domestic abuse. A complete report will be posted soon!

December 2nd Meeting Highlights

A new year begins . . . with a lighted candles officer installation ceremony conducted by Janice Kane. A huge thank you to our outgoing officers for their dedication and leadership in 2011. Welcome to our incoming 2012 board! We believe each of you has the courage to light the fire and keep the SOS flame glowing!

December is a special time of the year when we remember the women and children at SafeHaven through donations for Santa’s Sack and other shelter needs. The collection table at Bonnell’s Fine Texas Cuisine in Fort Worth was overflowing with pj’s and other gifts for SafeHaven clients. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

New members and guests were introduced by President Fonda Martin. State Representative Vicki Truitt provided a Texas legislature update.

Co-Chair Martha Blue reported that progress was on target for the 2012 Celebrity Chefs event on January 15. She also introduced Chef Jon Bonnell, one of the generous Celebrity Chefs participating in the event at the Southlake Hilton.

Mid-Cities SOS members and guests enjoyed an informative lunch meeting, at Olenjack's in Arlington, Friday, November 4, 2011.

Sarah McClellen-Brandt announced projects for the upcoming holidays that included the distribution of the Greatest Gift Catalog
and preparation for the SafeHaven holiday program, Santa's Sack Toy Drive.

Invitations for the upcoming Celebrity Chefs 2012 event on January 15th are scheduled to be mailed November 15th.

Mid-Cities met at the Arlington Shelter to enjoy salad and a beautiful two layer cake catered by Susan Clark, owner of Sweet Memories and one of the SOS Celebrity Chefs.

The program included watching a powerful documentary called Telling Amy’s Story, which was produced by Penn State Broadcasting and funded by the Verizon Foundation. The film told the story of Amy Homan-McGee, a 33-year-old mother of two who was killed by her husband in 2001 when she decided to leave him after suffering years of abuse. By laying bare one woman's story and the many opportunities to alter its outcome, Telling Amy's Story has the power to educate, heal, empower and -- most importantly -- save lives.

The members also had a chance to see one of the two Dodge Grand Caravan vans purchased by SafeHaven with funds donated by SOS from its May Tennis Benefit proceeds.

Mid-Cities Supporters of SafeHaven Celebrity Chefs 2012. Sunday, January 15 from 6:30-10 pm at the Hilton Southlake Town Square. Meet Tarrant County's and the surrounding area's best chefs as they sample their most delectable cuisine. Drink an endless glass of wine courtesy of Bear Creek Spirits and Wine. Try your luck at the Champagne Diamond Drop to win a 1 Carat Diamond donated by Richard's Custom Jewelers in Hurst. Enjoy watching artist Richard Nunez as he creates a one of a kind painting which will include the hand prints of the children of SafeHaven. The art will be entitled "Healing Hands" as we focus on raising much needed funds to benefit the child victims of domestic violence at SafeHaven. Tickets are limited and are $125 each. WOW!!! What outstanding members of this the Mid-Cities S.O.S.

The Tennis Benefit has now been declared official and the event rose over $32,000 to be used for a van for the children and women of the SafeHaven Shelters. The 20th Year of Fun was just that! There is going to be some really exciting news to come out of this event! Mary Lee has announced that the funds that the Tennis Benefit raised in May 2011 will buy a van, but in her great business way and connections…there may be two vans for the monies that YOU raised…..that is really great volunteering….

……...remember our mission to help adult and child victims of domestic abuse in Tarrant County. Through fund-raising, publicity and volunteerism. SOS helps to provide emergency shelter, outreach services, clinical counseling, legal advocacy and support groups to families who are experiencing violence in their homes.

My challenge to each of the members for the balance 2011 is to Volunteer.

Let’s really get behind the following programs:

Meals for Moms needs to have an SOS Contact and we need to plan to do lunch for one or both Shelters soon on the week-end. Get a small group of your friends and do lunch on a Saturday or Sunday. This is really rewarding and the clients that are there are so appreciative.

Resource Fairs – Contact me or Krista Moffett, moffett@safehaventc.org Court Accompaniment for shelter clients – Dana McCarty and Leah Shaver will lead this group. SafeHaven knows how to call these great ladies, when needed.

There is also Hotline/Crisis Support that is needed – requires training and this training can be given with just our members in attendance at a specified location….just need you to sign-up.

Berry Good Buys Volunteer Day Contact is Anna Saunders or Martha Blue. Think about donating your time to work at Berry Good Buys, even once a month or when they need extra help filling the racks or rearranging.

The following are the donations/collections that have been full filled or are coming up and we will be adding them to our luncheon invitations each month to remind us of the needs for the Shelters.

The following is an update on our donations:

April- April Showers- white linens – We donated new sheets and pillows from our account to outfit all beds at the shelter in Fort Worth and you brought extra linens to be used as needed at both Shelters….THANK YOU!

Summer- Summer Wish List……There were Funs available to outfit the children with the needs for camp and outdoor fun the entire summer. An extra treat for the children this year was the donation of time by Steve and Mia and other pros at the Southlake Tennis Club to teach the children at the shelters how to play tennis by holding a special tennis camp JUST FOR THEM!

August- Back to School…..What a success! Our Luncheon at Ernie’s Seafood got off with a bang for the upcoming Fall with cash donations of almost $400. And a carload of backpacks and etc……just what was needed for the moms to send their children to school……THANK YOU!

November/December- Christmas Donations for Moms….you will receive updates of the needs……

The next big event….Celebrity Chef 2012 is underway!

The Committee is being led by Martha Blue and Julie English. They have brought in newcomers to get involved with this event and you should SAVE THE DATE….January 15, 2012…..buy your tables and individual tickets early, because this event will be a SELL OUT….. EARLY! The surprises that are in the works are so outstanding. Diamond and Champagne, Cookbook Collection, Raffles for Chef’s Dinners, the list goes on and will help us work toward our mission and provide an exciting and fun evening while VOLUNTEERING for our causes!

Julie English and Martha Blue, co-chairs, along with their committee, are hard at work planning Celebrity Chefs 2012. The event will take place Sunday, January 15th at the Hilton of Southlake Town Square. It is sure to be a fabulous night with many of the metro-plexes top chefs on hand to sample their best cuisine! Wine tasting, exciting raffles along with a live auction like no other make this an event you will want on your calendar! Proceeds benefit the child victims of domestic violence. will NEVER forget, but we aim to raise much needed funds to benefit the children of SafeHaven.

Wednesday. We will continue to meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the Month. Optional lunch at 11:30
with the meeting starting at noon. Please bring $10 cash or check to Martha Blue to cover lunch buffet.

20-LOVE Tennis Benefit a "Lovely" Success!

Mid-Cities SOS celebrated its 20th anniversary of the Mid-Cities SOS Tennis Benefit on May 17th, 18th and 19th at the Southlake Tennis Center. This event supports SafeHaven, a refuge for women and children in Tarrant County who are victims of domestic violence.

Mary Lee Hafley, Sarah McClellan-Brandt and Valerie Salter, all of SafeHaven, joined us during the three day event to speak to our participants and guests about domestic violence and how we can help to support the women and children who seek safety in times of crisis.

A total of 220 ladies participated in the tennis event and began each day with a delicious continental breakfast donated by many of our supportive SOS members. The mornings were filled with lots of friendly, competitive tennis with rest periods set aside to participate in the basket raffles and silent auction. Once again, our SOS members and community friends did an outstanding job in providing creative, unique and impressive items for the raffle and auction.

After play, a scrumptious box lunch was enjoyed by all. Following lunch, champions were declared, winners of raffles and auctions were announced, and our successful 20th Anniversary Tennis Benefit was celebrated.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this event. It could not have happened without all of Mid-Cities SOS working together.

Our SOS Organization had many exciting announcements during our SOS General Meeting, which took place at MiMi's in Grapevine, on May 6th.

Among the many anticipated announcements were our upcoming plans for the Tennis Benefit on May 17th, 18th, and 19th of May, which will be held at the Southlake Tennis Center in Southlake. We are looking forward to a busy, three day event!

Mary Lee Hafley, shared some heart felt stories with our members, in regards to domestic violence, and how it can effect so many lives. Also, a
presentation was made from Sally Bustamante to Mary Lee Hafley. A most generous donor, Temple Inland, donated a check for $4000 to SafeHaven.

Several of our members were surprised, as the announcements continued, for Roxann Taylor, nominated to be our Honoree for 2011 for Business, and Patty Shaw, was also nominated as our Mid-Cities SOS Shining Star for 2011. Too, Martha Blue, has generously offered to be our Chair for Celebrity Chefs 2012.

We had a wonderful luncheon, enjoyed meeting new friends and guests, and hearing the exciting news for the upcoming SOS events throughout the year!

Committee chairs report everything is progressing nicely! Here's how you can help make this event a big success . . .

Gay Johnson requests that your themed baskets be given to her at the May 6th SOS meeting. If this is not possible, please contact her (817-485-1055) or Linda Eliendfeldt (817-909-1092) to arrange a pick up.

More restaurant gift cards are needed for the silent auction! If you would like to donate, please call Debbie Farrar (817-424-3880).

Additional muffins and fruit trays are needed for the players' continental breakfast. Sandy Schwan (817-481-4937) would welcome your call to donate food or a cash donation to purchase food items.

Invitations to our 20th Tennis Anniversary Celebration party have been mailed. It promises to be an evening of wonderful food, energetic music and delightful fellowship. The April 1st SOS general meeting at the Fort Worth shelter was designated as "April Showers" luncheon. A SOS donation check for approximately $2000 was presented to SafeHaven to purchase new sheets for the Arlington shelter. A similar donation for new sheets was made last year to the Fort Worth shelter. President and CEO, Mary Lee Hafley, thanked the SOS membership for this special gift for the Arlington shelter.

As part of the program, Mary Lee shared several SafeHaven statistics as well as information about the valuable services available to the clients of SafeHaven to help them begin a new life. Many exciting plans are in the works for a child care center, which will include play kitchens, a pre-school playground, and an enclosed area with windows for easy viewing of younger children.

Mary Lee also mentioned that SafeHaven will be using the funds raised at this year's Tennis Benefit toward the purchase of a mini van, which is a much needed transportation service for the clients and their children.

The Membership Luncheon at Cacharel’s was a great kick off for the New Year, with over 60 in attendance. We had to skip February with the bad weather, so getting out and being at one of our devoted Chef’s, to Chef Hans Bergmann for our first luncheon of the year was really a nice touch. Presenting the check to SafeHaven with so many of their personnel there was great! Thanks to Patty Shaw, Peggy Hoelscher and Kathy Lincoln for a great day.

Committee Celebrates Success of CC 2011 and $112,481 gift to SafeHaven!

The Celebrity Chefs 2011 committee met at SOS President Fonda Martin's home on Thursday, March 10th. The fantastic news was that a check for $112,481.00 will be presented to SafeHaven at the annual meeting on March 24th.

Yummy appetizers, prepared by Debbie Meyer-Gore and Mary MacDowell, were the feature food of the evening. A fun and relaxing evening was had by all of our hard working committee members, while looking forward to next year's event!

A contribution from committee members to the children of SafeHaven was given in honor of Celebrity Chefs Co-chairs Deanna Stuart-Sonefeld and Judy Waitkus for their excellent leadership of CC 2011. As an additional thank you, Fonda presented a gourmet knife to each committee member.

The 2011 Celebrity Chef Event on Sunday, January 16, 2011 was so spectacular that saying thanks to Judy Waitkus and Deanna Stuart-Sonefeld with the help of their great committee seems so small. They brought new and innovative ideas for this event to make it bigger and better! The participation from the Chefs during the live auction was so exciting and the money raised was just unbelievable, a check for$112,481 was presented to SafeHaven. I really hope this committee will return for the 2012 Event! We have the Chefs already talking about Bigger and Better things. We should get them committed while the excitement still fills the air!

The Membership Luncheon at Cacharel’s was a great kick off for the New Year, with over 60 in attendance. We had to skip February with the bad weather, so getting out and being at one of our devoted Chef’s, to Chef Hans Bergmann for our first luncheon of the year was really a nice touch. Presenting the check to SafeHaven with so many of their personnel there was great! Thanks to Patty Shaw, Peggy Hoelscher and Kathy Lincoln for a great day.

The Tennis Benefit will be May 17, 18, 19, 2011.

Elaine Terry and Mia Poorman have returned to co-chair this 20th Year of Fun. There is going to be some really exciting things happening to make this event even better this year, so be a volunteer to help make this an over the top event. The sheets were passed at the March Luncheon with little success to help. Please ladies volunteer to work, make baskets, bring food or play tennis, you are needed.

Remember our mission to help adult and child victims of domestic abuse in Tarrant County. Through fund-raising, publicity and volunteerism. SOS helps to provide emergency shelter, outreach services, clinical counseling, legal advocacy and support groups to families who are experiencing violence in their homes.

My challenge to each of the members for 2011 is to Volunteer!

We need your help in the following areas so that we can better serve the needs of SafeHaven by donating our time. We are good at raising money, so now let’s raise the level of giving our time:

Meals for Moms needs to have an SOS Contact and we need to plan to do lunch for one or both Shelters soon on the week-end. Get a small group of your friends and do lunch on a Saturday or Sunday. This is really rewarding and the clients that are there are so appreciative.

Resource Fairs – Contact me and go to one of the learning sessions for the speaking events. We have a request from SafeHaven for volunteers to man the gates at the “Art in the Square” in Southlake on Saturday April 16, 2011. I sent out an email request for four volunteers and have not received a reply from anyone. I will volunteer, so why don't a few more ladies join me?

Court Accompaniment for shelter clients – Dana McCarty and Leah Shaver will lead this group.

There is also Hotline/Crisis Support that is needed – requires training and this training can be given with just our members in attendance at a specified location….just need you to sign-up.

Berry Good Buys Volunteer Day Contact Anna Saunders or Martha Blue about donating your time to work at Berry Good Buys, even once a month or when they need extra help filling the racks or rearranging.

Mid-Cities SOS 20th Annual Tennis Benefit Meeting

20 Love" will be the theme for our 20th Anniversary Tennis Benefit and Celebration

The Mid-Cities SOS Annual Tennis Benefit is scheduled for May 17th, 18th, and 19th at the Southlake Tennis Center in Southlake.

The initial planning meeting for the 20th Mid-Cities SOS Tennis Benefit was held on February 23, 2011 at 11:45 a.m. Wildwood Grill in Southlake.

Additions of six courts have been built by the City of Southlake, bringing the total to sixteen courts, which will accommodate more players each day.

Our beautiful, and unique baskets will be on display, approximately, twenty varieties daily, along with our silent auction packages, as well.

Valeria Salter from SafeHaven, has representatives attending each day, giving us a brief talk regarding domestic violence. There will be a designated area at the event, that will be set up with information about SafeHaven for the tennis ladies to learn more about our mission.

A truck will be parked outside the tennis center, accepting donations to SafeHaven, for your convenience.

"20 Love" to be Theme for 20th Anniversary Tennis Benefit & Celebration

The Mid-Cities SOS 20th Annual Tennis Benefit is scheduled for May 17th, 18th, and 19th at the Southlake Tennis Center.

The second planning meeting for the event was held Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Central Market in Southlake. We have had a really great summer and fall was really busy….

Shining Stars Luncheon, October 22, 2010 recognized Peggy Hoelscher as the 2010 Mid-Cities SOS Shining Star and Jodie and Mark Sanders accepted the Orion Award on behalf of Hardy and Betty Sanders of Bates Container. There is not enough praise to be said for this family and other members of the Bates Container for all they donate to the charities of Tarrant County.

Thanks to the great work of Anna Sanders and Martha Blue with the help of Linda Eilenfeldt…they have collected and made numerous donations to the SafeHaven Shelters. They outfitted every bed in one of the shelters with new sheets and pillows and or working on providing the same for the other shelter….another challenge for the ladies of Mid-Cities SOS to meet. I love the way they work behind the scenes securing great donations from books to flip flops, swim suits, pool floats, bug spray…watch out these talented ladies could secure a donate the pool!

The Guest Speaker, Darren McGrady, former chef to Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth was entertaining and worthy of a standing ovation for his support and fund raising for SafeHaven. Great Preview for Celebrity Chef event.

In line with the “Meet the Challenge”…. Hats off to Dan Henry, the FOX 4 Meteorologist, for his donation of $20,000 to SafeHaven after he won the Jason Whitten SCORES Foundation football skills competition. This lets us know that the word to fight domestic violence is reaching other areas and succeeding.

Peggy Hoelscher was recognized as the 2010 Mid-Cities SOS Shining Star at the Annual Awards Luncheon October 22nd. As an 11-year member of SOS, Peggy demonstrates compassion with service and selflessness for the victims of domestic violence. This commitment includes multiple leadership roles as SOS treasurer, parliamentarian,
2005 president and currently 2nd Vice President. Above all, her support for the annual SOS Tennis Benefit helps ensure its success and longevity. Congratulations, Peggy!

Jodie and Mark Sanders accepted The Arts League Orion Award on behalf of Hardy and Betty Sanders, the Sanders family and Bates Container for being true champions of the arts. SOS Delivers Linens to SafeHaven Fort Worth Shelter

SOS Treasurer Linda Eilenfeldt and Urgent Needs Co-chairs Martha Blue and Anna Saunders delivered 11 boxes of bed linens to SafeHaven's Fort Worth shelter this month. Jeremy Carroll, SafeHaven VP of Operations (not pictured) and Valerie Salter, SafeHaven Special Events Coordinator were on hand to accept the delivery.

SafeHaven staff members handling the day-to-day operations of the shelter are extremely grateful for this donation, which is our largest goods donation to date. Linens are always in short supply, and this month's delivery included enough brand new sheets and pillowcases to cover every bed in the Fort Worth facility, plus an extra four dozen pillowcases for good measure. This is the third of our three recent member-inspired projects. In the summer, SOS fulfilled the shelter's summer wish list, providing enough swim suits, flip-flops, sun screen, bug spray and summer pool toys for each child in residence. This was followed by our members' generous support of the back-to-school program, supplying the children with new clothes and shoes for school. Our SOS members have always been quick to come to the aid of the women and children at the shelters, and even in challenging economic times have been generous in their support. Many thanks to all our charitable members for being true supporters of SafeHaven. Says May Lee Hafley, SafeHaven President, "Once again, MCSOS members are our heroes!"

The New Year began for Mid-Cities S.O.S. with new requests and new challenges from Mary Lee Hafley and her staff at SafeHaven.

We are meeting the Challenge…….

Mom’s Night Out at the Shelters: Provides home cooked meals for the clients at the shelters. Contact Fonda Martin 817-485-3281 until a new 2nd VP is in place. Several of our members have delivered and served meals to the mothers and their children at the shelters. Their faces and thanks tell the story in a big way. This program is working!

Resource Fairs: Members will staff booths/tables at fairs and inform the community about how to help victims of domestic violence. Contact Fonda Martin at 817-485-3281 to inquire and/or volunteer. Training classes have started and will be continuing for a couple of months with the next class scheduled for September 8, 2010 at the SafeHaven Gramacy Location.

Court Accompaniment: Volunteers will drive clients to court from a safe and designated location. Contact Leah Shaver at 817-571-2065 to volunteer. Training for this program is pending.

Our May General Meeting focused on the above volunteer opportunities. Our speaker Tim Abbott discussed strategies for attracting the next generation of donors and volunteers by expanding our use of online social media such FaceBook and expanding into other internet websites that will improve our fund raising efforts for SafeHaven. The Celebrity Chefs 2011 co-chairs and committee have already created a Celebrity Chefs presence on FaceBook. The SOS website is now accepting donations online.

The Tennis Benefit under the leadership of Elaine Terry and Mia Poorman brought in a record amount for this event for SafeHaven. The Raffle, Basket Raffle, and Silent Auction were all exceptionally special this year. The three days, May 18, 19 and 20, 2010, saw really nice cool weather and fun was had by all. The buzz is that it was the best ever!

Celebrity Chefs 2011 has been rescheduled to Sunday, January 16, 2011. The co-chairs, Judy Waitkus and Deanna Stuart-Sonefeld with the help of their great committee are bringing new and innovative ideas to this event to make it bigger and better……Buy your tables early!

We are half way through the year and are on track with record donations. We are identifying new fund raising opportunities and thanks to Anna Saunders and Martha Blue are collecting goods from hotels and department stores to address SafeHaven's urgent needs.

As we complete the rest of the year with a record number of members at 104, I look forward to new and exciting accomplishments from the members of Mid-Cities SOS.

Celebrity Chef 2011 Planning Committee Is Ramping Up

SOS Urgent Needs Team In High Gear

We have been making deliveries three out of four weeks every month to either Berry Good Buys, the shelters or the Transitional Living Program. Donations have been coming from individuals as well as businesses.

The SOS Board-approved funds of $300.00 was used to completely fulfill the needs on SafeHaven's summer children's activities needs list. We provided swimsuits and flip flops for all children (and a few extras,) sunscreen, bugspray, pool play and safety items, and craft kits. The SafeHaven staff was thrilled to have the full supply of needs for all the children - which meant no one was left out from pool time and other activities. They are especially grateful to Tara Hutchins-Welsh for supplying the wonderful rolling coolers - very handy to have!

Bed linens are on order from a commercial linen supply company. We will be able to provide a brand new set of sheets for each and every bed in the Fort Worth shelter. Martha Blue's friend, a La Quinta Inn manager, hooked us up with their pricing deal and shipping.

The donation drive held at our August General Meeting was very successful. After the luncheon, three full vehicles were driven down to Berry Good Buys, loaded up with household and miscellaneous items for their 'Resale Road Trip.' Reece Small and Martha Blue had their vehicles parked outside the country club allowing our members to simply drop off their items on their way into the meeting.

We are very excited to report that our Back To School program collected a total of $750.00!!! This was received with great appreciation and relief by Krista at SafeHaven. This means more children were able to have new shoes and clothes for their first day back at school than we had anticipated. SafeHaven sends its heartfelt thanks for the school supplies, cash and gift cards and acknowledges that Mid-Cities SOS always comes through for them, again.

2010 SOS Tennis Benefit Nets $32,000 for SafeHaven's SafeCall Hotline

The 19th Annual Mid-Cities SOS Tennis Benefit held at Southlake Tennis Center on May 18, 19 and 20 this year was a wonderful success for our organization and SafeHaven. Two hundred and six women participated in this three day event that raised $32,000 that will greatly help SafeHaven’s SafeCall hotline. In 2009, this service received over 50,000 calls.

Mia Poorman and Elaine Terry, this year’s co-chairs of the benefit, are so appreciative of our Mid-Cities SOS members who contributed so much to make this event the success that it was. Over 50 fabulous baskets were donated by members and community friends for the basket raffle. Many of the players were extremely impressed by the quality of each themed basket. The silent auction contained many sought after items including tennis lessons and restaurant gift cards. Over $2000 worth of the gift cards were donated by area restaurants and some were generously donated by our members. Six lucky winners “scored” fantastic spa packages.

Each day began with a continental breakfast for the players provided by our members. Who can resist homemade scones, muffins and an abundance of fruit? Certainly not hungry tennis ladies! And, they enjoyed these goodies while listening to our opening speaker each day from SafeHaven. Valerie Salter and Mary Lee Hafley did a wonderful job in sharing the importance of what this tennis benefit is all about.

Central Market, one of the chief sponsors, donated delicious box lunches each day of the event. And, to top off lunch, Timarron Country Club donated their famous chocolate chip cookies. Delicious!

After four hours of play, a delicious lunch, winning baskets and silent auction items, all the participants left with a feeling that they helped raise money for a good cause and promised to return next year. We can only hope that it will be as successful as this one.

Many thanks to our fabulous committee for working so diligently on this event. These ladies included Jane Wood, Martha Ragsdale, Tara-Hutchins-Welsh, Sandy Schwan, Gay Johnson, Donna Burdette, Carolyn Fobes, Connie Nichols, Debbie Farrar, Patty Shaw, Sally Wobbeking, Martha Matthews, Linda Eilendfeldt, Carolyn Ogburn, Debbie Reynolds, Anna Saunders, Patti Campbell, Fonda Martin and Valerie Salter. Painting with a Twist in Grapevine has selected Mid-Cities SOS as their designated charity in honor of women at their Paint with a Purpose Sweet Dreams event on May 23rd from 2pm to 5pm. Mid-Cities SOS May 7th General Meeting

Mid-Cities SOS had a fun meeting on May 7th at Mezza Luna Restaurant in Keller. Our speaker was Tim Abbott who shared how to get more volunteers engaged in joining and supporting our club. He had statistics on trends and made several suggestions on how we can improve our communication with all ages of women.

Julie English, the SOS 2010 Shining Star Selection Committee chair proudly announced that Peggy Hoelscher has been selected as the 2010 Mid-Cities SOS Shining Star. Peggy joined SOS in May, 1999, served as Treasurer in 2001 through 2004, as President in 2005, as Parliamentarian in 2006 and in 2009, co-chaired Hospitality and Programs.

Temple-Inland Donates $4000 to SafeHaven at the May 2010 SOS General Meeting

Linda Timmons, SOS member and President of Bates Container, presented a check for $4,000 from Temple- Inland to SafeHaven at our May 8th General meeting. Temple- Inland, a vendor to Bates Container, has chosen SafeHaven as the recipient of the donation in recognition of the demonstrated commitment Bates Container and its' employees have for SafeHaven. Karen Hoaglund, Temple-Inland Containerboard Sales Manager, was instrumental in securing this grant through the Temple-Inland Foundation.

On behalf of Temple Inland, SOS Member and Bates Container President, Linda Timmons presented a donation of $4000 to SafeHaven. Representing SafeHaven is Krista Moffett, SafeHaven Volunteer Coordinator.

19th Annual SOS Tennis Benefit Scheduled for May 18 - 20

The SOS Tennis Benefit Committee is organizing the 19th Annual SOS Tennis Benefit. The event, which will be held May 18-20 at the Southlake Tennis Center, features a tennis event, raffle, free tennis drills and a fabulous lunch catered by Central Market. As always we wouldn’t be able to host such a large event without the help of our many volunteers. We need donations of breakfast items for the morning, volunteers to work at the event, and raffle baskets.

Elaine Terry, Tennis Benefit Steering committee chairperson, said "This year we have collected more from community sponsors than last year. We are grateful and excited that our tennis benefit continues to draw the support of the northeast community. We are expecting higher than normal attendance, so we encourage those interested in participating to register quickly."

We begin the New Year for Mid-Cities SOS with new requests and new challenges from Mary Lee Hafley and her staff at SafeHaven. We the members of Mid-Cities SOS will have opportunities to do what this organization does best: volunteer our time and assist in caring ways that will give new hope to the clients of SafeHaven, as well as give us an opportunity to inform our communities about why we are so passionate about the work to help victims of domestic violence.

To summarize the plans:

“Moms' Night Out at the Shelters” Prepare and serve home cooked meals for the clients at the shelters. To volunteer, contact Donna Burdette at 817-545-7012.
“Resource Fairs” Inform people in the community on how they can help victims of domestic violence. To volunteer, contact Fonda Martin at 817-485-3281.
“Court Accompaniment" Drive and accompany a client to court from a safe and designated location. To volunteer, contact Leah Shaver at 817-571-2065.

Our May Luncheon is designed to inform us about all three programs. Our speaker, Tim Abbott will inform and inspire us on how we can improve our fund raising for SafeHaven.

The 2010 Celebrity Chefs Event was such a great way to start our year under the leadership of Donna Burdette and Anna Saunders contributing a very impressive $68,500 of the $75,000 given to SafeHaven on March 5th. "Thanks" seems like such an inadequate word to expressive our gratitude to these highly capable ladies for leading such a GREAT Celebrity Chefs TEAM that resulted in this gift for our cause.

The March Appreciation Luncheon on March 5, 2010 had a record attendance and was held at the lovely, comfortable home of Cecilia Monacelli. Chef Noah Miller prepared lunch and even gave a cooking class! This wonderfully planned event by Janice Kane, Leah Shaver, and Lynda Sanders had some coveted door prizes and at the end of the day, resulted in 9 new members.

We are already in “the swing” of the Tennis Benefit under the leadership of Elaine Terry and Mia Poorman. They have some exciting Spa Packages available for raffle drawings and WOW! I have heard there are some great silent auction items. If you want to get involved by playing in the event or volunteering, mark your calendars for May 18, 19 and 20, 2010. The buzz is that it’ll be the best ever!

We continue to face challenges to succeed in this down economy and the rise of domestic violence becomes greater with the uncertainty of each day. Thank you to the new 2010 Board members providing leadership to make this year as good as 2009.

Celebrity Chefs 2010 – A Spectacular Success!

“Celebrity Chefs was an outstanding success and the results were beyond our expectations!” report Co-Chairs Donna Burdette and Anna Saunders.

The Hilton Hotel at Southlake Town Square was the new venue for this year’s event, and we could not have made a better choice. Every detail presented by the Hilton’s staff was sheer perfection. From the moment guests entered the Hilton’s front doors, it was clear that this would be a night to remember.

The ‘Red Carpet Welcome’ included a Sparkling-Wine-and-Hors-d’Oeuvres reception. Delectable appetizers prepared by the Hilton Hotel paired nicely with Trapiche Sparkling wine, provided by Frederick Wildman & Sons Ltd., to start the evening off with a touch of elegance.

“From the time we stepped onto the red carpet along the red velvet rope, we knew this was going to be something special,” remarked guest Valerie Salter of SafeHaven. As the doors to the ballroom were opened, guests were awed by the exquisitely-appointed room. The chandeliers, the special-effects lighting, the color selection all added to the ambiance. Guests were treated to a colorful array of Chefs – from nationally-recognized personalities, to Iron Chef competitors, to home-town favorites, to local icons – all stepped up to showcase their culinary talents in the name of compassion.

Attendees were able to wander from one station to another to meet and mingle with the Chefs themselves. Each Chef offered a sample of his/her own signature dish. Some of the signature dishes presented was a classic favorite, while others were creations debuting for the first time that night. Guests could be seen excitedly making their way from one chef to another, savoring the offerings of each, and then comparing notes with their tablemates. Try as they might, it was impossible to pick just one favorite among so many outstanding dishes.

The Chefs tell us that they will never forget one particular moment of the evening. When called on stage to be introduced, they were given a lengthy rock star standing ovation in appreciation of the outstanding job done that night. Truly, a moment to remember!

A highlight of the event was the live Chefs Auction featuring a unique dining experience presented by each individual Chef, as well as travel packages and jewelry. Lots of lively bidding took place while guests tried to outbid each other for what they knew would be out-of-this-world experiences. Many who have won these coveted Chefs Auction Packages in the past made sure they were front and center for the auction. We are hoping that the lucky winners of these packages will keep us posted on their parties and share photos with us!

It was with great pleasure that the announcement was made that this year’s Celebrity Chefs event put us well over the $1,000,000 milestone in lifetime contributions to SafeHaven. How fitting that we achieve this landmark in Mid-Cities SOS’s twenty-fifth year! Chef Noah Miller said, “It is an honor to be a part of this great event. We are glad to have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of kids affected by domestic violence.” All our chefs were thrilled to have participated in this year’s Benefit and were particularly impressed with the upscale event it has become. Long-time participant Chef Brian Olenjack commented that he was pleased with the outcome of the event and that the Hilton gave it an inviting atmosphere. Good news – each Chef had nothing but praise and was happy to have been invited to participate. Even better news – all hope to be able to attend once more next year!

The Co-Chairs offer their deepest thanks to all who had a part in making Celebrity Chefs a historic success. Funds raised topped $90,000 this year, which will have a tremendous impact on the lives of the children at SafeHaven who count on our support. Not only have we raised significant funds with which to carry out important programs at SafeHaven, but we are also raising awareness of the issue of domestic violence and opening the door to conversation about it.

Our March 5 Membership Appreciation Luncheon was a huge success! We had 59 people attend and grew our membership to 90 members with ten new members joining that day.
